The Center for the Arts welcomes the public to “Atmospheres: natural landscapes and quietude,” a collection of abstracted landscape paintings by Northampton artist Kate Childs. The paintings will be on display in the East Gallery. The artist will host an opening reception during Arts Night Out on Friday, October 14, 5-7 pm.

Childs works with oils on canvas. “In every landscape painting there is an expression of feeling,” she says. “I do not work from photographs directly. Rather, I use them to remember. I work in any layers, coming back to a painting many times to add layers of paint until I can feel the emotional quality visually. My goal is to project to the viewer a sense of stillness, a meditative presence.”
