Event Description

ONE NIGHT ONLY

“A powerful, disturbing, and heartbreaking film. Has the power to change the way we Americans treat our children.”
-- Mary Pipher, author of Reviving Ophelia

“A riveting and compelling expose [of] why we need federal regulation of marketing to children. Anyone who wonders why kids are so demanding of brand-name products must see it.”
-- Marion Nestle, author of Food Politics

“Jaw-dropping. A damning indictment [and] a must-see for anyone who has kids or cares about them – in other words, everyone.”
-- Michele Simon, author of Appetite for Profit

Join us for the Valley premiere of this powerful new film!

Consuming Kids sheds desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multibillion-dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. The film traces the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world.

Consuming Kids was produced locally by the Media Education Foundation, and proceeds from this event will benefit the Northampton Public Schools’ Arts Enrichment Programs and the Northampton Arts Council’s KidsBestFest.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Susan Linn, author of the bestselling book Consuming Kids; child advocate Enola Aird, founder and director of the Brooklyn-based Motherhood Project; and the producers of the film.
