Event Description

Photographs by Pamela Cobb Reveal “Illusions of Place”

Northampton MA—“Illusions of Place” represents Pamela Cobb's appreciation for both the dramatic scale and spaces of the west and the intimate spaces of the east, and a corresponding vision of these two very different landscapes. Her photographic exhibition appears in the East Gallery of the Center for the Arts from October 2 through October 26. The public is invited to an Arts Night Out opening reception on Friday, October 12, 5-7pm.

"My focus as a p

hotographer is to examine the perception and experience of landscape and to portray the mood or spirit evoked by light and scale," says Cobb." I live in western Massachusetts, a landscape that is familiar to me and feels like home: intimate and accessible. Inspired by many years living in the west, I often long for the splendor and sense of the sublime evoked by the mountains and vast open plains. I went looking close to home to make images that could evoke a similar sense of awe and expansiveness, and found these illusions of grandeur in the most ordinary and unassuming fields, hills and parking lots."

Pamela Cobb moved to Northampton, MA in 2006, after spending 18 years in Northern California. Her photographs have been exhibited nationally and are in the collection of the San Francisco MoMA Artists’ Gallery. Her work has been purchased for the Hyatt Pritzker Collection and for numerous private collections including that of architect Frank Gehry and sculptor Jamie Carpenter. She has been awarded two residencies by the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming and the Blue Mountain Center in New York. She has a B.A. in Art History from Kenyon College, studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, and earned an M.F.A. from California College of the Arts.

Regular gallery hours are 11am-4pm, Tuesday through Friday.
