Event Description

Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, Lenelle Moïse and Mistinguette Smith in an evening inspired by James Baldwin. The evening will be a dynamic combination of work that centers on or is inspired by James Baldwin and other writing that is interesting in conversation with his work.

Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within. James Baldwin

James Baldwin was an American literary master: a novelist, playwright and essayist of great lyricism and power. His work is a tremendous influence in cultural conversations around race. He lived as an expatriate, primarily in Paris, for much of his life; he also taught at the University of Massachusetts in the eighties. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of his brilliant book, The Fire Next Time.
Speakers and Readers:
Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, Professor Emeritus, Afro-American Studies, Literature and Writing, University of Massachusetts. Novelist, The Harder They Come.
Lenelle Moïse, playwright, poet and performance artist, Expatriate, Ache What Make.
Mistinguette Smith, poet. Executive director, The Black/Land Project.

Event is part of the Local History/Local Novelists Series curated by Forbes Writer in Residence Susan Stinson. For more information, visit www.forbeslibrary.org or call 413-587-1017. All events are free and open to all.
