When the Recession broke in 2008, the female pronoun was almost entirely absent from the public media. The following spring, Christian McEwen started interviewing women about their relationship to money. Much of what she heard was being told for the first time. It had never been shared except in pieces – one part to a trusted spouse or family member, another to a financial advisor or beloved friend. Over the course of the interview, each woman’s “Money Story” gradually became manifest: in its confusion and entanglements, its vulnerability, its power. The relief was palpable. There was a tremendous sense of liberation simply in telling the story.

Legal Tender: Women & the Secret Life of Money is the distillation of more than 50 such interviews. It is intended to act as catalyst, modeling courage and honesty and what some might call “emotional financial literacy” for the listening audience, both through the play itself, and through a linked workshop and discussion series, known as Money Talks.
