Artist Statement/Bio
Lyell Castonguay is a knock down, drag out, no holds barred woodcut printmaking extraordinaire. Originally from Maine, Castonguay attended the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester NH where he received his BFA in Illustration after completing intensive study in printmaking and drawing.

His most recent series of seven large woodcut portraits, ranging in size from 36″ x 54″ to 36″ x 72″, depict 19th and early 20th century magicians. Castonguay is now interplaying splatter and woodgrain textures, bright colors, and calligraphic lines to illustrate birds.

Castonguay’s work has been exhibited at APE in Northampton, MA, the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art in Springfield, MA, the Aberystwyth School of Art in Wales, Lorg Fine Art Printmakers in Galway, Ireland, and the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, MA. Castonguay is a past recipient of two Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants. At his most recent community project Castonguay collaborated with a group of volunteers to print 7 large woodcuts on Main Street in Northampton, MA. Castonguay is also an active member of Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, MA.

Hi, thanks for connecting. I am still doing large format (BIG) digital work and since we ended community photo access, I bought the Valley Frame Works, which was the business below me. I needed a job, and no one would hire a guy in his 50's, so I had to buy a business-pretty much the worse thing an artist would want to do-but it pays the bills (sometimes). But yes, visit our site at www.amherstvalleyframeworks.com or facebook us, and check out the exhibition gallery-Freedom Trails Gallery. We now have a great exhibit of BIG-GIANT prints taken of the earth and showing global climate change. The high res pics are available to US Citizens, since our tax dollars go into putting the satellites up in space- some of them were taken from the space station. but do come by and let's collaborate! Ani  256-0949  open 12-6pm Tues-Sat. call first so we can set up a time. Best, Ani
