Interactive Intaglio at First Churches of Northampton
July 8, 2011 from 5pm to 9pm
Intaglio: A printing process that uses an etched or engraved plate; the plate is smeared with ink and wiped clean, then the ink left in the recesses is transferred to a dampened piece of paper by way of a press. - Woodcut is a relief printing artistic technique in printmaking in which an image is carved into the surface of a block of wood, with the printing parts remaining level with the surface while the non-printing parts are removed, typically with gouges. The areas to show 'white' are cut away with a knife or chisel, leaving the characters or image to show in 'black' at the original surface level. The block is cut along the grain of the wood (unlike wood engraving where the block is cut in the end-grain). The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the surface with an ink-covered roller (brayer), leaving ink upon the flat surface but not in the non-printing areas.
BIG INK features the large woodcuts of Lyell Castonguay, Chris Millette, Eben Kling, and Ali Osborn. Castonguay invited three friends to interpret how scale changes the context of an image. Their combined effort has produced 9 works, which range in size from 2' x 4' to 3' x 6'. This exhibit incorporates a variety of aesthetics; including the misfit characters of Kling and the mythical visions created by Millette among others. BIG INK will be exhibited in the Northampton Center for the Arts' East Gallery, which is open 11am-4pm Tuesday thru Friday. An artist reception will be held Arts Night Out Friday, September 14th from 5-8pm.
Coinciding with the NCFA opening, there will be an outdoor woodcut workshop on the front lawn of the Unitarian Society of Northampton located at 222 Main Street From 4pm-8pm artist volunteers will hand print six large woodcuts made by local artists. Liz Chalfin, director of Zea Mays Printmaking, and Brandon Graving, director of Gravity Press Experimental Print Shop, will be in attendance providing technical support. BIG INK is free, family friendly, and an excellent opportunity to learn how woodcuts are carved and printed.
As Castonguay explains, “The objective of the BIG INK exhibit/workshop is to promote woodcut as an enduring artistic process. Woodcut has changed little in the centuries, but remains a vital medium that is explored by new generations of artists. Monumental woodcut is a modern invention that challenges the traditional idea of a print.”

We now have a great exhibit of BIG-GIANT prints taken of the earth and showing global climate change. The high res pics are available to US Citizens, since our tax dollars go into putting the satellites up in space- some of them were taken from the space station. but do come by and let's collaborate!
