Artist Statement/Bio
Krista DeNio is a choreographer/ director/ performer/ writer and educator, currently based in Northampton, MA.
In Western Mass, she has collaborated with various artists, educators, activists and venues, including Jen Polins/ Saliq Savage (www.wiremonkey.com), Cynthia McGlaughlin (http://www.cynthiamclaughlin.com), Lani Nahele, Matt Mitchell (100facesofwarexperience.org), Javiera Benavente, the Julius Ford/ Harriet Tubman Healthy Living Community, among others. Krista also served as the Executive & Artistic Director of Earthdance (www.earthdance.net),from 2009-early 2013, continuing and building many artistic relationships with NYC based collaborators and other local and national artists.
In the San Francisco Bay Area (1997-2007), she created and produced her own work, and performed/collaborated with Jo Kreiter and Flyaway productions, Kim Epifano/ Epiphany Productions, Tanya Calamoneri, Allen Willner, Angus Balbernie/ 1000GreyBirds, Gabriel Todd/ freaksoultribe, Rachael Lincoln, Susannah Martin, Joan Bruemmer, Ryan Eggensperger and many others. She co-founded the Experimental Performance Institute (EPI) at the New College of California (2002), where she served as movement/theater faculty & assisted with programmatic development between 2002-2007. In New York City, some performances/collaborations included: Nina Rolle’s Zen Cabaret (NY Clown Festival at The Brick), Katsura Kan's Curious Fish (Chashama, NY), Sally: M.I.A. written & performed by DeNio, in the soloNOVA festival (P.S. 122), Meredith Monk's Ascension Variations (Guggenheim Museum) and Leslie Satin’s Soft Verge at LaMaMa.
In New Mexico, she directed multiple theater projects with Working Classroom (Albuquerque, Santa Fe), where she helped develop and direct an interview-based, original community theater work, A Light In My Soul/ Una Luz En Mi Alma, a project about the Crypto Jews of New Mexico, with the Working Classroom ensemble, Leigh Fondakowski (Tectonic Theater Project) and parts of the local New Mexican community.
Krista received her BA in Dance/Dramatic Art from U.C. Berkeley and her MFA in Theater: Contemporary Performance from Naropa University. Further training has included: American Conservatory Theater (ACT) Summer Training Congress and a plethora of dance, movement, vocal, acting, yoga and spiritual work. www.kristadenio.com
