Building more regional connections to arts and culture publications and support organizations in the Northeast

Creating opportunities for folks to gather in person

Designing print materials to market the site

Publishing an annual catalog of Valley Art Share member work

Organizing town or county VAS collaborators to help with organizing and member engagement

Rebuilding the network using an open source free platform such as BuddyPress

In this workshop we create a safe container to explore the practice of authentic movement with a mover, an active and a sitting witness. Working in trios we will discover the powerful learnings that come from each of the three roles. This practice can be immeasurably helpful in deepening the practice of contact improvisation by supporting our capacity to source from within and support our skillfulness in deeply listening to ourselves while connecting with another.

*as a mover with eyes closed we deepen our ability to follow our own authentic impulses inspired by sensation, imagery, emotion or story. We have the opportunity to experience staying true to our own inner impulses and journey while being relational with an active witness who is supporting us.

*as a sitting witness we learn to cultivate our own ability to non-judgmentally witness other while simultaneously witnessing our own inner process

*as an active witness we learn to stay true to our own impulses while actively supporting the mover's process with or without touch

No experience in authentic movement or contact improvisation are necessary for this workshop. However, experience and a willingness for deep embodied listening and comfort with touch are helpful.

In this 2-day power workshop, Carol Swann sources Arnold Mindell's Process Work (WorldWork Conflict Processes) and "Deep Democracy" to guide participants in a liberating examination of the subtle layers of rank & privilege. Tensions lying just under the surface – the shadows of class, race, gender, money, ageism, ableism, etc. – are acknowledged and redefined to reveal that EVERYONE has rank and that bringing greater awareness to our rank and privilege can radically impact our interpersonal dynamics. Caring and participatory theory, role-play exercises, and group processes engage our voices and social bodies to transform our relational, structural, and cultural interactions.

In this 3-day workshop, Jacqueline Rubinstein helps somatic practitioners and dancers of all types explore non-mechanistic strategies for repatterning their subconscious habits. The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education that builds kinesthetic awareness through gentle movement and directed attention to increase ease and functionality. The pedagogical strategies of Feldenkrais (attending to oneself slowly, gently, quietly, and playfully) bring out new, liberating movement options for improvisational sensitivity and inner connection. "Our heightened sensibility has the potential to change the way we see the world around us and to render us more capable to act intentionally and effectively." (Sylvie Fortin).

Renowned teacher and captivating performer Kirstie Simson shares her insights into the application of improvisation & performance as a life practice. Drawing from Contact Improvisation, modern dance, aikido, meditation, and practiced & performed improvisation, this 3-day workshop builds upon simple physical principles to explore the experience of moving, learn the skills of dancing in partnership, and expand our improvisational sensitivity to each other and the environment. Bringing participants into contact with the vitality of creation moment to moment, Kirstie allows us to understand our bodies more profoundly and come into greater depth of being. "What facilitates creativity is being able to live in a world where insecurity is part of our nature...not to avoid it, not to find ways to fix it, not to move away from it but to actually live it."

Since 2002 ACTh Summer Arts has provided families with a full day educational program centered on creative expression and learning in the arts. We strive to create unique and engaging programs that will inspire children to grow as artists. performers, and individuals. Programs are designed for children, ages 5-12, from all backgrounds and levels of experience.

A week at ACTh Summer Arts program is experiential and dynamic. We play, we learn, we get loud, we get dirty, we bravely take to the stage, we draw, paint, print, sculpt, and duct tape! (to name a few). It's a busy and fast paced program with focused activities and open ended learning. This is creative immersion and it's lots of fun!

Teaching Artist Bios:
http://www.acth.org/teaching-artist-bios/

Our lead teachers are supported by an assistant teacher who assists for the full day. All teachers are highly experienced teaching artists who are skilled at leading children through varied, hands-on, and experiential activities. Group sizes are limited to 12-14 students.

About Carved Content:

Carved Content is a project designed by Carand Burnet and myself to beautify derelict areas using large woodcut as our creative vehicle. A woodcut is an image carved into the plank surface of a piece of wood. The areas that show white are cut away leaving the image to show black on the surface level. The wood is then rolled with ink to show the design. Using hand chisels, we execute a carving into a boarded up window, door, or neglected wall. After the carving is complete we roll ink across the surface of the window, door, or wall and leave it as a permanently installed mural on the premises. Carved Content’s mission is to popularize the woodcut medium by placing it in highly visible and openly accessible locations within the local community. After viewing the woodcut mural we hope community members will seek out additional information about Carved Content, the history and tradition of woodcut, and other artists who practice printmaking.

Using partial funding awarded by the ECA+ and provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Carand and I will begin working on a 5 1/2 foot large woodcut on the side of the defunct Hurry & Scurry copy center at 118 Union St in Easthampton, MA starting July 2013. Our mural will depict the cross section of a tree with all the growth rings fully carved. The choice of subject is inspired by the persistence of nature in the face of urbanization (moss and grass grow plentifully inside the Hurry & Scurry building) and our recognition of the sudden recent passing of Bryan Nash Gill who’s woodcuts illustrate the complex intricacies of the natural world. Carved Content will take approximately 30-60 days to complete and we hope to have an official unveiling in August or September during Art Walk Easthampton.

Easthampton is a burgeoning arts center in western Massachusetts. The town is located in the Pioneer Valley – about 2 hours from Boston. It is a small community with many talented artists. Everyone has been incredibly supportive of our project including: Pine Valley Real Estate, ECA+, and the Mass Cultural Council.

Lyell Castonguay is a knock down, drag out, no holds barred woodcut printmaking extraordinaire. Originally from Maine, Castonguay attended the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester NH where he received his BFA in Illustration after completing intensive study in printmaking and drawing. His most recent series of seven large woodcut portraits, ranging in size from 36″ x 54″ to 36″ x 72″, depict 19th and early 20th century magicians. Castonguay is now interplaying splatter and woodgrain textures, bright colors, and calligraphic lines to illustrate birds.

Castonguay’s work has been exhibited at APE in Northampton, MA, the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art in Springfield, MA, the Aberystwyth School of Art in Wales, Lorg Fine Art Printmakers in Galway, Ireland, and the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, MA. Castonguay is a past recipient of three Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants. At the most recent community printmaking project entitled BIG INK Castonguay and Carand Burnet collaborated with a group of volunteers to print 7 large woodcuts on Main Street in Northampton, MA. Castonguay is also an active member of Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, MA.

—-

Carand Burnet’s three-dimensional constructions reside in glass domes and shadowboxes. Her work references specific places in invented worlds. Composed of hand cut wood, shells, and snakeskin, she manipulates these natural objects to comment on the interactions between nature and civilization. Part natural environment and part architectural form, the viewer is invited to discern his or her own connections in these contained worlds. Series such as The Brooklyn Bridge along with her shadowboxes visually translates a poem by the artist or writers such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars, and others.

Burnet’s work has been exhibited in Seattle, WA, Portsmouth, NH, Amherst, MA, and in The Hosmer Gallery in Northampton, MA. She is originally from South Carolina and now lives in New England after earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2010. She was a 2012 Easthampton Bearfest Artist Participant. She co-owns the Curbside Gallery: a traveling art shop and is the co-organizer of BIG INK and Carved Content. Her constructions, hand made books, and prints reside in private collections.

Combining the tactics of eco-hacks and maker faires, Place [Maker] Space is a new interdisciplinary residency happening at Earthdance this Fall. Do you address notions of PLACE in your work? Do you crave dialogue with others who are drawn to the land? We are looking for makers and researchers; artists, scientists, social scientists, activists; thinkers and tinkerers to populate our convergence. We will combine technologies from dance, performance, visual art, ecology, geography, community organizing, architecture, and—surprise us!

Over the equinox weekend this fall—September 19 to 22—Place [Maker] Space participants will invent practices, adapt technologies, analyze problems, devise experiments, and craft performances as a means of proposing “solutions” to place that privilege the embodied or experiential. Our first morning, we will pitch projects and directions of inquiry for the following days. The subsequent time will be filled with work and shared research. We will enjoy a consistent morning movement practice and shared mealtimes.

Would you like to dig deeper into your research? We are looking for a small group of 10-25 participants that will complement, challenge, and engage each other’s perspectives and practices. Please propose YOUR participation on our online application.

Applicants are invited to propose specific concepts and approaches they would like to investigate which will help to guide the content and form of the weekend. Participants will be expected to:

Present briefly on their work

Come with an open mind and desire to engage with others

Assist with meal preparation and cleaning

Other activities could include leading a specific workshop, skill share, or conversation; screening a film; making a presentation or short performance; blogging throughout the residency at placemakerspace.com; or helping with documentation.

The next 6 month grant cycle is now underway

Last cycle we collectively raised $768 through small monthly donations by 35 Valley Art Share members. Some incredible proposals were made and I'm looking forward to seeing what ya'll have up your sleeves for this cycle.

Here's how the deadlines are shaking down this time 'round:

August 1st: Project proposals are due

August 15th: Deadline to sign up to participate in the selection process (sign up to contribute to the collective fund here)

September 15th: Votes are collected (I'll send out an email to all the folks who have signed up)

September 30th: Grant recipient is announced.

You've got almost the whole summer ahead of you to prepare and recruit your friends. I'm hoping we can double the number of folks who are currently giving the collective fund over the next 6 months. If we do this it will make more sense to have shorter grant rounds, allowing us to give about $700 to a project every 4 months.

I'll send out reminders when we get closer to the deadlines. In the meantime I hope you're getting a chance to hop off the computer and into a sunny spot by some water.

Til next time,

We strive to to bring accessibility to DIY zine-making as well as supporting radical independent publishing and hope to bring writers, activists, artists and community members together through sharing, connecting and collaborating.

Zines, which are written in a variety of formats, strive to set importance on bringing literature, art, and politics out of a profit oriented industry.
I've been in correspondance with some of you about how to recruit more folks to the micro grants.
I've been in correspondance with some of you about how to recruit more folks to the micro grants. This phase, once the proposals are submitted and prior to voting (deadline is March 25th), seems like an excellent time to encourage folks to support the collective fund. Up to this point I've been requiring that folks give for at least a month prior to voting because I think it's important that folks are signing on to support the fund in general and not just for one month to swoop in, vote for a friend, and be gone. That said, I'd like to give it a try and see if by encouraging friends and supporters to join the fund now, we can build a stronger base together for the next cycle. So....

Please join us in this grant cycle and help to rate the proposals by March 25th!

Contributing to the collective fund is a simple way and direct way to financially support artist-etceteras in the Pioneer Valley. Simply follow the guidelines to become a member, select a monthly contribution to the collective fund and then I will send you an email with the rating system for this grant cycle. You will be able to participate in the rating of proposals and your contribution will be added to the next grant cycle.

The Mutual Aid Micro Grants are a way to support creative work in the Pioneer Valley, these small contributions can add up to make a big difference for someone leading to the creation of new work, process and research. In this cycle we are granting $700+ to a selected proposal. Through its micro-grants Valley Art Share strives to foster mutual aid and a high level of community accountability and transparency by creating an accessible funding platform in which the entire granting process —from application and review, to voting and distribution of funds— is available to all its members. You can read more about it at: www.valleyartshare.com/microgrants

This is a work in progress, an experimentation in small-scale community-based funding. As always I welcome your feedback and questions so please do be in touch if you have any.
All the best,
Julia
Julia Handschuh
Valley Art Share
valleyartshare@gmail.com

Flaneur Walks Northampton is a poetic/conceptual walking tour series dreamt up by Shape&Nature Press. We have asked two writers from Northampton, Connolly Ryanand Betsy Wheeler, to each write a poetic/conceptual walking tour that guides readers through a re-exploration, re-

Readers will then be able to buy the pamphlets and take the walks on their own as the writers instruct. These are not your usual walking tours filled with historical tid-bits and local lore. Instead, expect to be taken on a poetic journey that investigates the psychic nature of the city.
