Ashfield painter Peggy Grose started visiting the Hawley Bog a few years ago and completely immersed herself in its unusual ecosystem: carnivorous plants, lush tropical-looking vegetation, woodpeckers, dragonflies and red-winged blackbirds sharing one bog in West County. Visual patterns of light and shadow with the startling colors of the animals living there. In some cases her vision demanded a really large format, a few of these painting are 4x5 feet in size. Grose uses combinations of watercolor, casein paint on silk and collage to create the works. Peggy says she can’t let herself go back this season. She simply can’t let herself be seduced by the bog this year, other things need her time. That is the pull of these paintings, they seduce you with texture and color. Think about what milk paint (casein) on silk might look like, might feel like, the creaminess of it. Now come and see her exhibit.
Grose was born in New York City and grew up in Dennis, Mass. She attended the Cambridge School of Weston, Cape Cod Community College and the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. She has been living in Ashfield, MA for the last 14 years and painting for the last 45 years.
Sunday, April 17, 4-6pm, join the artist for nibbles with music by Ellerle Ballard of the band “New Mom” who describe their music as folk/grunge. The reception will be in our new downstairs gallery in the lobby of The Blue Rock Restaurant. The restaurant will open its doors at 4pm for drinks.
