Artist Statement/Bio
Because I live at the intersection of the South River and the Pumpkin Hollow Brook, I am well aware of my role as a steward of water. And because I was born in 1958, the year the Wham-O Company popularized the plastic hula-hoop, it only seemed natural that I would rediscover the hoop as an adult. As a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I put the two together, water + hula hoops, and came up with Water Dances = public hoop dancing events to fresh waters. After receiving a grant from the Cambridge Arts Council this past spring to build illumined hoops, I danced with the locals to the fresh waters of Cambridge. Now I am dancing with locals out here in western MA to our fresh waters. Although I have collaborated on many community events as an activist, Water Dances is my debut as a Celebration Artist. I also co-facilitate a leadership program for activists and organizers nation-wide with Spirit in Action in Belchertown.
